Back to Normal

A lot has happened at the Home of Joy over the past year. After two years of school closures due to coronavirus, our children were finally able to attend school again. Thanks to home schooling, they were all able to skip a grade, which is great as most of the children are a few years older than their classmates because many of them started school later.

We also want to train our employees. In May 2022, we invited a doctor to educate the Home of Joy team about the prevention and treatment of malaria and train them in first aid. This year, we are planning training in mental and psychosocial health so that our team can also better support the children with mental health problems and trauma.

Four new children have been admitted to the Home of Joy. We are delighted to be able to offer them a safe and secure home. Our five oldest children are now living outside the orphanage. As they are older than 18, they now live together with our project manager. They all started school late and have therefore not yet completed their compulsory education. We want to support them and accompany them on their way to a self-determined life. Taban has just finished school with the highest marks and is now in the collage to obtain his university entrance qualification so that he can study medicine. We are still looking for sponsors for our older children.

LIVIA

My time at the "Home of Joy" children's home in Uganda was a formative and enriching experience. During my stay, I was not only able to make a direct contribution to the children's everyday lives, but also gain valuable insights into a different culture and way of life.

I helped look after the children, assisted with everyday tasks and organized playful and creative activities. I was particularly impressed by the warmth and joie de vivre of the children and the commitment of the staff. On site, I experienced a caring and supportive environment in which solidarity and mutual appreciation were tangible.

This experience broadened my view of the world and showed me how important interpersonal commitment is. I am very grateful for my time at the "Home of Joy" - it made me grow personally and I will always remember it.
