Community Education

In the area around Chopelwor, people have attended school for less than 4 years on average. As a result, the illiteracy rate in this rural region is very high. It is estimated that around 60% of the villagers cannot read or write properly.

In May 2022, we hired a teacher as a caregiver at the Home of Joy children's home, thus launching the community education project. While our children are at school, the teacher teaches the villagers in a church. Thirty to forty adults come every Monday and Wednesday for the free two-hour lessons. Some even walk a few kilometers to take part. Twice a week, she also teaches children who do not go to school because their parents cannot afford the school fees. They learn reading, writing and mathematics.

With the community education project, we want to give the village population an opportunity to learn English and improve their reading and writing skills.

LIVIA

My time at the "Home of Joy" children's home in Uganda was a formative and enriching experience. During my stay, I was not only able to make a direct contribution to the children's everyday lives, but also gain valuable insights into a different culture and way of life.

I helped look after the children, assisted with everyday tasks and organized playful and creative activities. I was particularly impressed by the warmth and joie de vivre of the children and the commitment of the staff. On site, I experienced a caring and supportive environment in which solidarity and mutual appreciation were tangible.

This experience broadened my view of the world and showed me how important interpersonal commitment is. I am very grateful for my time at the "Home of Joy" - it made me grow personally and I will always remember it.
